FLATWOODS was created in two weeks for the 2024 DreadXP Extraterrestrial Terror Jam. Survive against an onslaught of extraterrestrial threats in this short roguelite alien home-invasion game.
Alien visitors have descended upon your home, warping it into an incoherent labyrinth of rooms and hallways. Utilize a variety of special items to evade capture and fight back - but be sure to watch the shadows, there's more than one kind of monster creeping through your corridors.
Standard WASD FPS controls, item usage is indicated by the number or abbreviation by their respective icons. Press tab to pause and un-pause.
**Start with Hard Mode and try lower difficulties if you find that it's too challenging.** Headphones recommended, directional audio is very important. Maps, item, and enemy placement are all handled procedurally. On some occasions this can lead to impassible conditions. If you find yourself in such a situation, the pause menu has a button to reset the map, and the keyboard shortcut to do so is 'M'.
Game design, art, and programming by LogDev. Some additional texture bases used were taken from Polyhaven.com. Video clips and imagery used in some segments of the game are from Pexels.com, as well as some sound effects from Freesound.org. All external assets licensed non-commercially under Creative Commons. Music licensed under premium commercial license from Dark Fantasy Studio. "They're coming" audio sampled from the trailer for 1976 horror film "Dogs".

So, this is actually really really damn cool. Using the classical look of the Flatwoods monster, putting you in a constantly warping house... all the ideas are great, and it all LOOKS awesome.
However, to be brutally honest, the gameplay just ended up being flat out frustrating more than anything. Enemies constantly sneak up on you from the back, and you are basically just running around headlessly hoping you are lucky enough to have a Shambler trap, since those guys especially get annoying.
My victory at the end was little more than pure luck of running into enough Material to enter the portal once I stumbled across it. it didn't feel like a fight. It felt like a fluke.
But with that said, if that was ironed out, this could be an AMAZING randomized horror experience! So please, it would be awesome to see you work more on this. Flatwoods could easily be great!
